Getting Ready for Growing Season

PRUNING

Spring & summer is the best time to prune stretched succulents as they are preparing to grow and develop new leaves and stems. Pruning helps to promote bushier growth and maintain the shape of the plant. Succulents will inevitably become stretched indoors over the winter. By pruning the stretched stems back, you can encourage the plant to grow in a more compact and fuller shape.

To prune stretched succulents, you'll need a clean, sharp pair of scissors or pruning shears, we recommend Fiskars Micro-Tip Pruning Snips for an accurate and sharp cut. Cut back the stretched stems, leaving about 3-4 layers of leaves from the base of the plant. Pruning should always be done in the spring, before new growth begins. This will give the plant plenty of time to recover and grow back fuller and bushier than before.

WATERING

After a winter of slow growing, dormant succulents, your watering schedule can start to change come spring and summer. During these seasons, succulents are actively growing and require more water than in the winter months. Of course however, it's important to avoid overwatering as this can lead to root rot and other issues. By following proper watering techniques, you can help your succulents thrive during the warmer months.

When watering succulents in the spring and summer, it's important to use the right amount of water, depending on the size of the plant and pot, and to water the soil directly, avoiding getting water on the leaves. There is not watering schedule for succulents, as the specific watering needs of your succulent may vary based on factors such as indoor temperature, humidity, and the size and type of the plant. A good rule of thumb is to only water when the top inch of soil is very dry to the touch. Make sure to allow the soil to dry out thoroughly in between waterings. If in doubt, it's always better to underwater than overwater your succulents.

With the right preparation and care, your succulents can thrive during the spring and summer growing season. From pruning and watering techniques, to providing adequate light and nutrition, taking the time to give your succulents the care they need can lead to a beautiful and thriving garden all season long.
