MEALY BUGS
Mealybugs are the most common pest that affect succulent plants. These tiny insects feed on the sap of the plant, causing damage and reducing the plant's overall health. To control mealybugs on succulents, it's important to catch them early and take action promptly. Here are a few effective measures to control mealybugs:
- One of the most effective methods is to simply wash the affected plant with a solution of water and dish soap. This will kill the mealybugs and help to remove any remaining eggs or nymphs.
- If you have a persistent mealy bug problem, another option is to dip a cotton swab into 70% isopropyl alcohol, and apply the swab directly to the bugs, wiping them away. This method should be done 3 times a week, until you no longer see the insects.
SCALE
Scale insects are another common pest that can affect succulent plants. These small insects look like scabs on your plant, and attach themselves to the plant, feeding on its sap, causing damage and weakening the plant. To control scale on succulents, it's important to act quickly and effectively. Here are a few measures to consider:
- One of the simplest and most effective methods for controlling scale is to manually remove the insects from the plant using a cotton swab dipped in 70% rubbing alcohol. Do this 3 times weekly, until you no longer see the insects.
- Another option is to use a horticultural oil, which is a petroleum-based spray that smothers the insects and their eggs. It's important to follow the instructions carefully and avoid applying the spray during hot or sunny weather, as this can damage the plant.
Whichever method you choose, it's important to regularly monitor your succulents for any new infestations and take action as soon as possible. There are some cases of mealy bugs and scale that cannot be rectified, and disposal of the plant is the best action to take, before the infestation reaches other house plants.
